Whether you work from home or are just creating an office to store all of your bills and financial records, setting up a home office can be expensive!
In the past few years that I’ve been working from home I’ve discovered that my home office needs have drastically changed.
Here are four ideas for saving money on your home office.
# 1 – Choose a Spot Where You’ll Actually Work
The biggest tip I have is to choose a place where you’ll actually work! I’ve tried to force myself to sit and work at a desk or table for the past two years but I just can’t seem to do it.
For me, I’m most productive when I’m sitting in my recliner with my laptop on my lap. As soon as I hit that chair I’m in work mode.
Since my recliner is now my “office” the two side tables beside me are where I store all of my essentials.
Since I no longer feel bound to work in an actual room dedicated to being an office, I have the pleasure of saving on the cost of the desk plus wall décor that I’m sure I would buy if my office had its own room.
If you like working at a desk and have a dedicated office in your home that’s great. If not, don’t worry! Just choose the spot where you feel the best and can get the most work done. It’s really that simple.
# 2 – Strip Your Supplies Down to the Bare Minimum
It’s tempting to want to go all out on supplies for your home office, especially if you’re working from home. But there’s really no need.
Only buy stuff that you’ll actually use.
My work from home essentials are my laptop, camera, 2 planners, one notebook, pens, and colored markers. That’s all I really need!
Only keeping what you need will save you money and prevent clutter.
# 3 – Buy Used or Build Your Own Furniture
When it comes to office furniture the expenses can add up quickly! The best way to save money is to either buy used or build your own furniture.
For instance, we just moved into a new house where furniture has been left behind. There’s a small hutch/bar piece of furniture left in the dining room. I love the functionality of the piece but it’s pretty ugly as is.
I’ve been working on transforming this old piece of furniture into something beautiful by using leftover paint and stain that I already have. Once done it will house all of our bills and financial records!
# 4 – Add Slowly
There’s no need to rush out and buy everything at once. Let your room (or corner of a room) come together slowly and naturally. This way you’ll be able to get the best deals and find items that you truly love.
