I don’t know why I do it to myself. I think I’m subscribing to the wrong magazines. I was so excited to get 4 years of Road and Track for something like $12 on Ebay. Four years!! That was a bargain, or at least it seemed so at the time. You see, I’ve always loved cars. The only problem is now I see every car that comes out. They write up huge articles about each car in this magazine. I drool all over them. Never borrow a car magazine from me unless you don’t mind touching lots of saliva.
What I really need to do is subscribe to Money magazine, and Kiplingers. I’ll actually get information I can use and I won’t drool all over the place. The only problem is that I haven’t found a good deal on the subscriptions. “Money” doesn’t ever seem to be a very good deal on Ebay, or anywhere else. They certainly don’t sell subscriptions at the bargain basement prices of a lot of other magazines. Oh well.
So, what got me on this tangent? Well, I saw a picture of the BMW M6 convertible. Geez. I’d even go for an M3, but both are so far out of my reality, I’ll just have to stare at them in a magazine. It almost feels like car porn.
Check the occassional nuisance offers from your credit cards to give you a free year of a magazine. Usually you get a second year after the first if you don’t cancel. Anyway, thats how I got my current year of Money magazine. Free… thats a price I can handle. I have a reminder on my work calendar to cancel next year, so no problem there.
Thanks for the tip Scott!
I subscribe to two magazines at the moment, The New Yorker and Harpers. I used to be a full fledged worshipping Sports Illustrated subscriber. The second I got my hands on the newest SI I would devour every page. Then I slowly stopped watching sports on TV and dropped my subscription. I am fairing quite well and enjoying my current subscriptions without SI withdrawal. I guess I grew out of SI but I still watch sports on TV.
I subscribed to Money magazine today. I checked Ebay and a one year subscription was going for $16.99. I then checked the Money website and found that they had it for $9.99 for a year. I went with that. The one catch is that they autorenew it at the end of the subscription. I got three years so that won’t be for awhile.
When you see an attractive looking new car, just work out how much depreciation would cost you each week – I find this makes them *much* less attractive ;)
ps. I have a nice 45 year old Mk II Jaguar. Looks great, didn’t cost much second hand when bought (25 years ago) – and is still worth what I paid for it (well, in real $ it’s gone down due to inflation). If you want to indulge a passion for cards without going broke, go vintage!
