Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Apple has announced the date to introduce the world to their new Iphone. I’m embarrassed to say that I’m looking forward to seeing what they are bringing to the market. I’m a current Iphone 4 user and really like it, although I’m convinced I’d equally like an Android phone if that’s what I had started on.
Since I’m an Iphone user now, it makes the most sense for me to continue that trend when upgrading my phone. The reality is that I have spent money on applications and have purchased a couple other Apple products that all integrate well with each other. If I was to switch platforms, it would be like throwing all those dollars away. So the debate of whether to switch to an Android phone is really not much of a debate at all.
The more important question is whether I should upgrade to a new phone. My current phone works just fine and my wife hasn’t complained too much about using my old Iphone 3GS, although she would like to upgrade to my Iphone 4. (She is kind enough to always use my previous phone since she just doesn’t care that much about technology). Anyway, I keep telling myself that I won’t necessarily upgrade to the new Iphone unless it has a compelling reason to. I guess we’ll see what they introduce and go from there. I can tell you that I will NOT join the frenzy of people standing in lines etc to get the latest device. If I do decide to upgrade, I’ll wait until the lines are gone and they have plenty of stock.
I should probably note that I classify purchases like this as excessive and not needed. I consciously spend these dollars (when I do), knowing full well that I’m spending money that could probably be more responsibly allocated somewhere else (think daughter’s college fund). Only after meeting all of our other monthly goals (including the college fund) and having the excess cash to spend, would I consider spending money on a phone that I “really” don’t need.
Update: With no Iphone 5 being released, I guess that makes my decision much easier. We’ll just have to carry on with our existing phones and the new IOS5 upgrade. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to spend $200 on a phone that isn’t that different than the Iphone 4.
