There are some extremely rare cars out there. Some of them are so exclusive that seeing one in public is like spotting a unicorn. Many of them had limited production numbers and were gorgeous. For car enthusiasts like myself, getting the chance to see one of these five vehicles “in the wild” is a real treat.
1. 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO
Between 1962 and 1964, Ferrari only made 36 250 GTOs. This vehicle is often considered the “holy grail” of rare cars. It’s one of the rarest Ferraris in existence (though you’ll see a few more on this list). It was originally built for racing, boasting a 3.0-liter V12 engine that delivered both power and precision. Its sleek, aerodynamic design and undeniable performance made it dominant on the track. Today, the 250 GTO is one of the most expensive cars in history. A GTO that raced at Le Mans sold for $51.7 million.
2. 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa
Even fewer 57′ Testa Rossas were built, with Ferrari limiting production to just 33. It was designed specifically for endurance racing and claimed multiple victories at Le Mans. The 3.0-liter V12 engine provided outstanding speed and durability, making it a force to be reckoned with. Its curvaceous body and open-top design give it an unmistakable look that still captivates car enthusiasts. Today, the Testa Rossa remains one of the most sought-after Ferraris in the world, fetching at least $16.39 million and as much as $40 million at auction.
3. 1956 Aston Martin DBR1
The Aston Martin DBR1 is an exquisite blend of style and performance. Only five were ever built, making it one of the rarest British race cars in history. This car secured Aston Martin’s first and only overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959. Its lightweight aluminum body and 3.0-liter inline-six engine made it a competitive powerhouse. The DBR1 was driven by legendary racers like Stirling Moss and Carroll Shelby. When one of these went up for auction, it fetched over $22 million, proving its legendary status.
4. 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California SWB Spider
Yes! Another Ferrari is on the list. In the 50s and 60s the carmaker was doing its best to create a Le Mans-winning vehicle. The result was a slew of extremely rare cars that automotive lovers are always excited to see. Only 56 of these stunning convertibles were built, making them a rare sight. It featured a 3.0-liter V12 engine and a shorter wheelbase (SWB), improving handling and performance. A pristine example of this car can be sold for upwards of $18 million at auction.
5. 1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato
Last, but certainly not least, is the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. Aston only made 19 of these, making it a rare collector’s item. Zagato reworked the original DB4 GT, giving it a sleeker and more aerodynamic body. Under the hood, it housed a powerful 3.7-liter straight-six engine, capable of reaching 153 mph. Its rarity and beauty have cemented its place as one of Aston Martin’s most prized creations. The highest price paid for one of these at auction was $14.3 million.
The Ultimate Collector’s Dream
Owning one of these rare cars is not only a status symbol. You essentially own a piece of automotive history. Seeing one of these unicorns in the wild is something of a dream for most enthusiasts like myself. Most of us will never own one, but they continue to be amazing machines to this day.
