The current pandemic has thrown the world into disarray with a number of industries facing hardships and job losses. But, that isn’t true for all, in fact, some industries are instead thriving primarily because of the issues being faced around the world. Here are five of them.
Gambling
For those with a penchant for gambling, the days off from work will have given them more time to be able to earn some more money. Online casino and bingo sites have been experiencing an increase in traffic as people find themselves with much more free time than previously. The likes of slingo bingo that combines slots and bingo can entertain bettors for hours on end as they try to get through the lockdown as easily and quickly as possible.
Whilst most of the major sports are currently on lockdown too, the likes of the Belarusian football league, tennis and even table tennis are still available to be wagered on for the hardiest of bettors.
Supermarkets
With almost every other shop closed down, ‘essential’ supermarkets continue to turn over massive amounts of income in just one day. Queues outside the door – naturally, two metres apart as government guidelines stress – for the majority of the day suggests that more people are buying more goods than usual.
Of course, the idiotic stockpiling at the beginning of the outbreak will hopefully not be repeated, but it did ensure a spike in supermarkets’ profits. And, after a long period of supermarkets’ profits falling quite drastically, this particular sector is on a rise – if only momentarily.
Food delivery
Whilst the on-the-door supermarkets are increasing their sales, so are the food delivery services that are maintaining the nutrition of much of the older generation and the less abled in these troublesome times. But, those who simply do not want to risk heading out to supermarkets or takeaways have also taken up the offer.
With revenue up over 11% of that this time last year, the food delivery service is booming as restaurants close and more people take up the offer of door-to-door comfort.
Online streaming services
With families and friends split up all over the country, the only way to keep seeing your loved ones’ faces is over a live stream. That has led to the once little-known app Zoom growing exponentially overnight, despite entering into the technological sector almost a decade ago.
In fact, on Monday 23 March, the app was downloaded over two million times worldwide with the service enabling up to 100 people to sit in a chat-room, though concerns have been raised about its security efficiency.
Health and wellbeing
As the coronavirus rages, people are becoming more concerned about their overall health. Of course, with gyms closed, home workouts have had to provide the impetus with TV star Joe Wicks’s morning P.E show becoming a huge hit around the globe.
With ‘cabin fever’ also a major fear for those with mental health issues, a plethora of advice has since circulated outlining how to keep yourself safe during this tough period with apps such as Calm experiencing growth.
