Working from home can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you’re brand new to it. Luckily, I’ve been working from home for a while now, so I can give you some tips and tricks to make it easier. Here are five of my favorite tips:
Find a Dedicated Work Space
Having a dedicated workspace is incredibly important when it comes to being productive while you work from home. If you’re lucky enough to have a space that you can have a desk and your computer then set it up. If not, no biggie, just make sure you have somewhere specific and comfortable to work from.
Get Yourself a Pair of Headphones (Preferably Noise-Cancelling)
Having a pair of headphones is helpful when you’re taking a phone call or video chat. And, if you’re like me and you have a roommate, you will absolutely need a pair of them. Further than that, I recommend having noise-cancelling headphones when you’re sharing a small space with another human being.
Get Dressed and Ready for Your Day
Working in your pyjamas is great for like two days, then it gets old fast. If you want to have a productive workday at home, you should get dressed and ready for your day. Not only will you feel better and more ready to work, but you’ll also look way more put together on your video calls!
Be Firm During Your “Off” Time
One of the biggest challenges people find when they start to work from home is that they don’t ever really clock out. It’s hard not to work all day every day when you work from home (trust me, I work LONG days and feel terrible when I’m not working). So, you need to set a schedule and keep it.
Have a clock in and a clock out time. It’s OK to do a little extra here and there, but work is not your life. Make sure that you are clocking out, relaxing and taking time for yourself. This is why it’s nice to have a separate space, but if you don’t have that luxury, put away your laptop where you can’t see it.
Make a Schedule for Your Day
If you want to be productive at home and you don’t want to work all day long to do it, then you need to make a schedule for your day. Plan out what you want to do, when you want to do it and your big goals for the day.
When it comes to planning your day, make sure that you don’t forget to schedule breaks in there too. Breaks are just as important as scheduling the things you actually want to do. Without them, you’re more likely to lose focus and your work won’t be quite as good.
