I love to travel but I don’t always have the means or time to book myself a fancy trip to one of my favorite places (so basically, Disneyland). So, when I need a break (and trust me, I probably need more breaks than I actually take) there are a few things that I do at home.
What is a Staycation?
Talking about staycations seems like a great idea right now. The travel industry has been hit with the unexpected (and unfortunate) uptick in coronavirus cases, and people are cancelling trips left, right and centre. But we all still need breaks.
Enter: the staycation. Staycations are exactly what they sound like. It’s a vacation, but there’s no packing, ticket booking or plane rides. A staycation is simply when you take time off to relax and have fun but you stay at home. And, if you’ve never done it before, it’s glorious.
My Favorite Staycation Activities
If you’ve never had a staycation before, you’ll be pleased to know that there aren’t really any rules around planning one. You simply need to stay home and do what you love. So when I’m planning my favorite staycation, here’s what I do:
#1. Movie Marathon
Is there anything better than watching all of your favorite movies without getting out of bed? Ok, technically you have to get out of bed every once in a while. But generally speaking, you can spend your staycation watching your favorite films.
On my last staycation (which was honestly too long ago) I watched the entire series of The Mummy (minus the last one with Tom Cruise, because I’m not a fan). It was splendid. Once that was done, itching for more Brendan Fraser gems, I moved on to George of the Jungle.
One of THE BEST staycation activities you can undertake is a movie marathon. It’s cheap and requires next-to-no prep. What more could you ask for?
#2. Board Game Nights
If your idea of the perfect vacation is one surrounded by friends and family, sitting on the beach while you all drink Mai Thais than a board game night might be your best staycation option.
Technically, this requires some prep but if you’re the type of person who likes to be a host or hostess, then it’s a great option. Gather your best friends up together and play some of your favorite board games.
One of the best big party board games is Cards Against Humanities or What Do You Meme because they’re created with fun in mind, and you can still participate in some fun and friendly chat while you play.
#3. Read a Good Book
Chances are you have a book or two on your shelf that you haven’t cracked open yet even though it’s been on your “to do” list for months. If that sounds like you, then the best staycation for you might just be a book-filled one.
I once took a staycation weekend and hammered out four books. That’s right four books because that’s all I did. If you’re looking for some alone time and want something relaxing to do, then grab a book and start reading!
