College is just around the corner and it’s important to think about how you’re going to manage your personal finances. And that brings us to the conversation on how to make money during college.
From part-time jobs to building a flexible schedule, there are a ton of great ways to make money during college. Here are some of my favorite ideas.
Get a Job on Campus
If you’re trying to make money during college, then getting a job on campus is a great way to do it. There are a lot of on-campus employers that will work around your schedule or simply have college-friendly work schedules.
Whether it’s with a professor (which can be great for your resume), at the student union, or at the cafeteria, an on-campus gig can be a great way to make some cash!
Freelance with Your Skills
If you have skills that you can freelance—and it’s likely that you do—you can make yourself a flexible schedule to work with your classes.
Writing and editing blogs, doing graphic design and layout, helping to build websites, or even doing data and administrative tasks can all be done on a freelance basis. Not only can this help you make money during college and help you build a flexible schedule, but it can also help you build up contacts for your post-graduation career.
Find Something Flexible
Rideshare services or food delivery can be a great way to make money during college if you’re looking for something flexible where you can make your own schedule. Sign up with Uber (or Uber Eats), Lyft, or a similar service that allows you to check-in and work when you have free time.
With a flexible option like this, you can modify your schedule when it comes to exam season or a big project so you work less when you have more time on your hands.
Get a Part-Time Job
Most people get a traditional part-time job when they make money during college. I started out my college career working at a liquor store around 15 to 20 hours a week.
Eventually, I switched out the liquor store for a paralegal position at a law firm, then ended at a government organization that I continued to work for after graduation. A part-time job can be a great way to make money during college!
How Many Hours Should You Work During College?
When it comes to making money during college, it’s important to keep it realistic. Yes, you need money to pay the bills but you also have to be realistic with how much you can take on.
During college, your focus should be your school work as much as possible, keep your work to a minimum—15 hours is the recommendation from most colleges.
