How can you prove to be a savvy restaurateur?
One of the best ways to do this is to learn how to diagnose your equipment – like your commercial ice machines – when you experience problems.
How to Diagnose Issues with Commercial Ice Machines
There are two steps you can take if you’re dealing with ice machine issues. Both will help you save money.
1. Figure Out the Exact Problem and When You’re Experiencing It
Some people notice a problem with their ice machine and simply call up a repair tech. You can save a lot of time and money if you take a few moments to figure out exactly what’s going on. When you do this, you may find that the issue isn’t as dire as you might think.
Start by recalling when you first noticed the problem. Was it at night, during the day, or all the time? Time of day can have a bearing on the situation because of changes in temperature and the difference in the amount of time the machine is used during various times of the day.
Next, determine what the exact issue is. Has the ice machine stopped making ice completely, or has it simply slowed down or started producing smaller ice. All of these are symptoms of different issues. Differentiating between them will allow you to come up with a proper diagnosis.
Finally, perform some tests. For example, if your ice machine has stopped making ice, you may theorize that the water lines are blocked. Unplug the line, turn the valve to the closed/off position, and put the line in a container with warm water to defrost.
If this doesn’t fix the problem, the next step would be to locate and replace the water filter. If you feel you can handle this project – go for it. However, if you don’t have the time or know-how, this is the time when a professional would be helpful.
2. Get Feedback from Your Restaurant Equipment Store
When you experience ice machine issues, you don’t necessarily have to call up a pricy repair technician right away. Talk to a restaurant equipment store. Their sales staff may know how to diagnose and properly repair your machine. And their advice is free!
Save Yourself Headaches and Financial Losses by Being a Savvy Restaurateur
Hiring outside help before you need it can lead to a lot of frustration. Granted, if you know nothing about how to diagnose, fix, or maintain your equipment, getting help from a professional is warranted.
But if you have some equipment know-how, definitely take some time to try and diagnose the issue yourself. Doing so will save you a lot of time (who wants to wait for equipment techs to show up?). And in the long run, it may very well save you some money – and who doesn’t like doing that?
