Here lately my energy to work on my house has suddenly reappeared. Over the long weekend I painted two rooms and then headed upstairs to a bathroom that hasn’t been used or touched since we bought the house, right around one year ago.
The changes I’ve been making lately have been super inexpensive but have made all the difference in how my house looks and feels.
If you, too, have caught the decorating bug here are my favorite inexpensive ways to decorate.
Paint
Paint is my go-to way to change the look and feel of a room. While this is definitely the most labor intensive of the options it provides the biggest bang for your buck.
I spent around $100 for three gallons of paint plus the supplies needed to paint two rooms. It did take my two days to paint the walls and trim by myself but the effort and little bit of money it took was absolutely worth it.
Rearrange
When I was a kid my mom would rearrange the furniture in the living room about once a month. It drove my Dad crazy but I guess it satisfied her need for change.
While I’m not quite as fanatical about rearranging furniture I am when it comes to wall décor. Every time I finish painting a room I rearrange all of my wall art until each of the rooms I’m working on has the feel I want them to.
Yard Sale Shop
Speaking of wall art I’m in desperate need of some semi-specific items. I price checked what I wanted on Amazon but wasn’t willing to pay that big of a price so I put yard sale shopping on the to-do list for the weekend.
Getting items at yard sales is one of THE BEST ways to get nice items for super cheap. The trick to actually getting what you want is to go early.
(In this category you can also check Facebook yard sales and Craigslist for the items you want.)
Flea Markets
After visiting yard sales flea markets come next on my list. While I love visiting flea markets just for the fun factor the deals for me have been hit and miss.
I can usually find one or two great deals at the flea market, normally in the outside sections.
Updating Furniture
A good 90% of the furniture in my house is hand me downs that family members no longer wanted for one reason or another. I’m pretty particular about saying “yes” to items since I keep my home pretty minimal.
The one exception to this has been high quality pieces of furniture made from real wood. Even if I don’t like the particular finish on one of the items sprucing it up with paint, stain and new hardware is easy to do and can transform the look.
If you’re working with a tight budget there’s plenty you can do to make your home look the way you want. Don’t be afraid of using creativity and of course, putting in some serious sweat equity.
