Looking for some frugal fun for the family this summer?
With kids out of school and summer routines pretty loose it’s a good idea to have a list of fund and cheap summer activities you can do as a family.
Here are ten ideas to try.
Host a Movie Night
Throw a punch of pillows and blankets on the floor and have a family movie night.
Pop some popcorn, make homemade pizza, and hit up Netflix or Amazon Prime for some free family fun.
Make Glow in the Dark Bubbles
Glow in the dark bubbles are just plain fun. No matter your kids age you can have fun as a family making these and then waiting until it gets dark to go outside and blow bubbles.
Here’s a glow in the dark bubble recipe.
Take a Sunday Drive
During the summer you can take a Sunday drive any day of the week. Pile the family in the car and go discover some new places in your neighborhood.
My family enjoys driving down backroads and looking for wildlife. If we see an animal we stop and let the kids take pictures.
Play Board Games
My girls (ages five and six) love board games. This is one of the fun activities we do as a family.
Right now we’re playing a lot of Monopoly Jr. and Bingo. Pick out some board games that are age appropriate and have a board game night each week.
Go Camping
Camping is my absolute favorite summer activity. To me there’s just nothing better than popping a tent in the woods, cooking over the fire, and staying up late together.
Cook a Themed Dinner Together
Make your dinners a little more fun by coming up with a theme as a family and then cooking together.
Do Yardwork
This might not sound like fun but I’d encourage you to give it a try. For my family we can make anything fun as long as we work together.
Organize the Garage/Basement
If you have an unorganized garage or basement like I do the summer months are a perfect time to get everything nice and neat.
Have each family member work on a section.
Have a Garage Sale
While you’re cleaning out and organizing your house be sure to make a garage sale pile. Once your pile gets big enough organize a yard sale as a family. You could then use the proceeds to take a fun little trip.
Visit the Library
Check in with your library and see what type of activities they have planned for the summer. There are normally some great family programs over the summer. At the bare minimum everyone in the family can check out a book and go home and read together.
What other cheap summer activities for families would you add to the list?
