I wrote a little bit about our home buying process a while ago and unfortunately, that process is still happening.
I knew buying a house was going to be stressful but I imagined that the majority of the stress was going to be from the drawn out inspection process that we had and also, negotiating. Nope, turns out I was wrong. The stress continues from the bank mixing up our info with another of their clients.
For anyone thinking of buying a house I hope you run into a lot less problems than we have but just to keep you prepared here’s the one thing you should watch out for!
Expect Everything to Take 3-4 Times as Long as You Plan
We started looking at our future house in February, I believe. (It could have been late January.) We wanted this house before we even knew that it was going to be up for sale so when we got that call and were asked if we wanted to come look at it the answer was a resounding “Yes!”
We looked at it. We wanted it – as long as it was in our price range. And it was. It was also a pretty good deal compared to similar homes in the area.
We immediately started negotiating. Then we were left to find the septic which the owner was never able to locate. This turned into more than a month-long fiasco. We didn’t want the house without the septic and it took several plumbers and several hundred dollars before we finally located it.
Once that was out of the way we had a regular home inspection, plus termite inspection which both came out as expected.
Now it was up to the bank. We immediately called the bank to get the ball rolling (which was more than a month and a half ago.) At first the bank was swift in getting things done. We bought an insurance policy for the house 17 days ago with bank promising we’d close early next week. Now every single week they have since said we’d close early next week. (Three weeks in a row now.)
To our dismay we get a phone call from the bank on Monday wanting to send the appraiser back out once again to get a photo of running water. What? So we get the photo of running water and now, we wait again. Just wondering what kind of crazy info they’ll want next. (Plus they had originally mixed up our info with another clients and were insisting that we were
To make a long story short expect EVERYTHING to take 3-4 times as long as you plan – the inspections, the appraisals, and most definitely the bank.
That’s the one thing you need to know when buying a house. Store up some patience and maybe you won’t get as frustrated as I have been!
