There’s one thing I now like about it and that’s decorating a Valentine’s box for my kindergartner to take to school. But giving your significant other gifts for a commercialized holiday? It feels so dirty.
I’ve always felt this way.
I’m not a girly girl to begin with. I don’t like flowers, I don’t wear much jewelry, I don’t wear perfume, and I definitely don’t want a box of chocolates that has one kind that I’ll eat. (What’s up with that anyway?)
So while everyone else is giving you advice on cheap Valentine’s ideas I thought I’d come up with a list of things you can do besides celebrating Valentine’s Day. J
Balance Your Checkbook
Sit down and balance your checkbook. When you’re done you can feel really good about being $50-$200 richer than the rest of America.
Or you can take that $50 that you’re not going to spend and move it into your savings account for something special.
Tell Your Significant Other You Love Them Everyday
Don’t say I love you just because it’s Valentine’s Day. Instead remind your significant other that you love him every day, not because Hallmark wants you too.
Earn Some Extra Cash
One step above the balancing your checkbook option you can go ahead and put some money back into your bank account.
Go through your house and sell some stuff and pocket the money. It’s pretty easy to do – especially if you sell on Facebook Yard Sales! I promise.
Plan Your Christmas Shopping
If jewelry, perfume, or stuffed animals were on your Christmas list start planning now. Figure out what you’re going to buy then head to the store a few day after Valentine’s Day is over and snag that stuff for seventy five percent off!
Perform a Random Act of Kindness
If you really want to spread the love this Valentine’s Day then perform a random act of kindness. Pay for someone else’s food, tape a dollar to a vending machine, help an old lady across the street, tell your parents you love them………….you get the idea.
*Bonus* Count Your Blessings
If you want see how loved you are on Valentine’s Day it won’t come in the form of a gift. Instead pull out a sheet of paper and start writing out everything you’re grateful for. You’ll soon realize just how incredibly blessed you are and that there’s more love in your life than you ever knew.
Being grateful for what you already have IS the key to true happiness and it won’t cost you a dime.
Do you celebrate Valentine ’s Day? Why or why not?
