I spent the past weekend helping my Dad host a yard sale at his store.
Much of my family gathered up their unwanted junk and took it to sell. The store was almost instantly packed full of yard sale shoppers. Almost everything sold.
Interestingly enough, holding that yard sale outside of the store more than quadrupled my Dad’s regular sales. (Who would’ve thought?)
With the success of the first sale he was eager to host a second. Since he has a store in another town a yard sale for this coming weekend was scheduled. And even though I had taken more than 15 trash bags full of stuff (between me, my two daughters, and my boyfriend) I only came back with about four.
So I started going through my house again. Really looking through the items that I never use, but for some reason still hadn’t parted with.
I came up with several more items to sell at the yard sale. And getting rid of all of that stuff felt so freeing.
Here’s the process I went through to really determine what to sell and what to keep.
# 1) Not Your Current Size? It’s Gotta Go.
If you’re holding on to clothes that haven’t fit you for years, let them go.
The only reason anyone should have clothes that do not fit them is if they recently had a baby.
Dress your body for the size it currently is. Even if you’re working on losing weight it could be awhile before you can fit back into your high school size. And by then the clothes you’re holding on to will probably be out of style.
Be proud to be where you’re at now. There’s no need in keeping things you can’t wear.
#2) Haven’t Used/Worn in More Than a Year? Sell it.
As I sifted through all my belongings for the second time I realized that I was holding onto many items that I hadn’t used in more than a year. This was especially true for clothes.
I had many pieces of clothing that were my size but that I had never worn. If I’m completely honest with myself I consistently wear the same three to four outfits. There was no need in me keeping clothes for the sake of keeping clothes.
You should do the same.
Unless an item has strong sentimental value there’s no point in cluttering up your home with useless stuff.
#3) Bad Gifts From Others? Don’t Let Them Clutter Your House.
My boyfriend had been on the receiving end of many bad gifts but he had a really hard time parting with stuff for the fact that it was a gift.
Not me.
There’s nothing wrong with getting rid of gifts that other people bought you – especially when you know you’re never going to use them.
Don’t feel guilty, just get rid of them.
#4) When In Doubt Come Back to It Later
There was a stack full of stuff I was iffy on. I didn’t want to sell something and then live to regret it, so I decided to sleep on it.
After thinking about it for a couple days I ended up keeping about half the items that were in my unsure pile.
DeClutter and Make Some Money
Going through your house and scouting for items to sell can be a really fun and even thought provoking process.
The best part is that you’re actually making some money while de-cluttering your house. What more could you want?
Do you have a hard time parting with your old stuff? Why or why not?

Wow, having almost everything sell is quite a feat. Hosting in front of a store and getting good results is interesting, but hey, if it works, then definitely do it again! Good luck with the next one.
