I love Netflix. It’s a key part of my cable-less strategy. We use their streaming service about 95% of the time and never seem to find the time to watch the one DVD that we have at any point. Well, Netflix is forcing us to make a change. As of Sept 1st, for existing subscribers, (and now for new customers), Netflix is increasing their plan by 60%. If you want to have unlimited streaming and one DVD at a time, your price is now $15.98 per month. That’s up from the current $9.99 a month that you’ve been paying in the past.
So, if you also find that you mainly use the streaming feature, you can go in to your account and cancel the physical DVD service. That will drop your price down to $7.99 a month.

It’s clear that Netflix is trying to drive their customers toward the streaming option. For us, it will be fine. I just hope that they add more content.
Yeah, I just got that email yesterday. It’s really annoying because there are several shows I’m watching/want to watch that are available only on DVD… I do watch streaming WAY more than the DVDs, but that’s due more to laziness with sending the DVDs back than anything else. 7.99/month for one dvd at a time seems like a lot… mostly because I don’t get that many a month. I’ll probably finish out the DVD series I’m watching and then drop the DVD option.
Between having Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix — I think that I’ll drop my blu-ray subscription and only keep the streaming. I can always go to a redbox and pick up movies if it becomes an issue.
Although – even with a 60% price hike, in terms of cost-per-hour of entertainment this would still be fairly cheap. I’m just not going to stand for it because the studios keep Netflix from giving me the movies I want when/how I want them.
I don’t watch much of the streaming stuff. I’ll save money by only going with the mail service.
I’m with Devin. I dropped the streaming part and will just use the mail service. I looked at my queue and I have 360+ titles listed. Only about 100 of them are available for streaming. I’m not going to miss out on all my series just to watch a few things streaming.
Why we just don’t watch much of anything, and don’t subscribe to any kind of service…
