Apparently a group of people in New York had quite a scam going. They had an army of waiters/waitresses who would run your credit card through an extra scanner while processing your transaction. After they had collected a chunk of numbers they would then be paid between $25 and $35 per card number. You can imagine how quickly that would help supplement their income.
Once the card info had been taken from the scanners, other people would then make new credit cards with those numbers on them and begin purchasing things. Lots of items were purchased and then were sold to specific people for cash. Sounds like they did a good job of managing the entire corrupt supply chain. You can read about it here:

I’m just glad that each individual isn’t responsible for the charges on their cards. This highlights the importance of reviewing your credit card statement each month. It only takes a second but could definitely protect you from paying unauthorized charges.
